Best Acne Medication – Types of Antibiotics For Acne That Work Very Well02.24.10

Meet the antibiotics: They are basically of two types – topical and oral antibiotics. Oral antibiotics were the first to be discovered. They included tetracycline and a host of other related anti-acne medications that you had to swallow for full effect. There are also erythromycin, oxytetracycline, doxycycline minocycline, and lymecycline. In the UK, the off-label trimethoprim is a bit more popular.

Topical antibiotics came shortly after and are often and largely used alongside the oral acne medications. You had to run them on your skin in the infected areas for them to clear your skin, and you had to do that about 2 times a day. Erythromycin is also a common name amongst topical antibiotics, as is tetracycline. Other trade names in this genre are stiemycin and clindamycin. They appear to have about the same effects as the oral types, but they have one advantage – they do not cause you stomach aches as side effects, which makes them better in a sense.

There is a catch, though. In recent times, a very resistant type of acne has been seen more and more frequently. These are Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), and they appear to be a lot more resistant to antibiotics. Often, they have been found to bounce back just days after topical antibiotics are supposed to have done their job, and short week later, if you have been using the oral type of medication.

But until you have Propionibacterium acnes, you can be confident that your acnes, the lesions, and the scarring that result are as good as history if you stick to your antibiotics.

Sugar and Acne – How Dietary Sugar Equals Acne02.23.10

The idea that our diet is somehow connected to acne problems has been disputed for ages. Since early in the 20th century, scientists have tested various foods and not been able to show any difference. However, a growing concensus among modern researchers and Internet connected individuals is finding differently.

Does Sugar Cause Acne

One of the biggest factors on the horizon of scientific research today is the glycemic index. Foods high on this index are known to cause a spike in blood-glucose levels, thereby triggering a response of insulin and a variety of hormones. This viscious cycle works against your favor as far as acne is concerned in three primary ways.

1. Sugar Causes inflammation.

The first and foremost of these is through inflammation of skin (and body) tissues. Insulin inflames body tissues reachable by the circulation system. This usually happens in combination with a host of chemicals like C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Insulin-like Growth Factor ( IGF), and IGFBP which in response to insulin spikes after a meal. The inflammation causes oxidation and interruption of cellular based processes which would otherwise ‘clean up’ skin conditions leading to acne.

2. Sugar Increases Sebum Production

In addition to inflammation, the hormonal changes which result from a blood sugar spike in your body contribute to higher sebum production in hair folicles. They also increase cellular aging (death and regeneration). All this extra material ends up clogged in the openings of your skin pores. This of course in combination with acne producing bacteria results in a lesion.

3. Sugar Supresses your Immune System

Which brings us to our third factor. The sweeping chemical changes brought by a blood glucose level spike can impact the function of our immune system. It is known that a single tablespoon of sugar can reduce the efficiency of your immune system for as long as 6 hours. This is the final blow to your skin. As long as your immune system is impaired, your defense to Propionibacterium Acnes bacteria is lowered. Its numbers proliferate on the surface of your skin, and in combination with increased sebum and inflammation start forming acne lesions days, even weeks before they actually appear.

Sugary Foods are a Bad Habit

As long as you continue eating junk sugary foods and rush meals whenever you can fit them, your body will continue to be ripe for acne. The biggest misconception of early acne studies was that people needed expensive, dangerous medications to stay clear. Today we know that consuming several well balanced meals in combination with other healthy lifestyle factors can make all the difference without buying any extra medications.
