Acne – How Sebum and Skin Oil Is Key To Acne08.06.09

Skin has sebaceous glands all over it except on lips. These glands produce sebum or skin oil. This oil protects the skin from harmful bacteria. Acne forms near the opening of these sebaceous glands. In normal circumstances, the cells forming the wall of the glands exfoliate from the pore opening. In certain circumstances, these cells become dysfunctional and instead of exfoliating normally, block the pore opening. This blocks sebum going out and it accumulates inside forming acne.

If hormonal disturbance is present, the glands produce sebum at a higher rate. This sebum keeps filling the gland sac and the bacteria called Proprionobacterium acnes (P. acnes) thrive in the atmosphere that is full of sebum and no air. As the bacteria flourishes, the gland gets infected. This causes infected acne.

Therefore we find that acne is caused because of sebum. If sebum were absent, acne would not be there. This sebum cannot be blocked. The only remedy is to remove excess sebum and keep the pore open to treat acne.

Why body produces sebum?

Sebum is acidic oil. It forms an acidic layer over the skin. This layer is called acid mantle. This acid mantle stops all the bacteria that want to invade the skin. It kills them. This acid mantle also protects the top layer of the skin made of dead cells and keeps the moisture inside the skin. Otherwise the moisture will evaporate fast. Sebum is the oil rich in lipids. Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands that are attached to hair follicles. Except for places such as lips etc, we have hair all over our body. And so we have the glands that produce sebum all over our body.

Oily skin-

When we produce more sebum, we get oily skin. Similarly when our glands produce more sebum and because of block on the glands the sebum gets blocked in the glands, we get acne.

Herbal Solutions For Treating Persistent Acne08.05.09

Acne or a pimple, is a skin breakout that occurs to anybody regardless of age or sex. Generally, this happens as a result of the overproduction of the oily substance called sebum.

Thus, acne develops out of the excessive oil production and eventually it clogs the pores. Naturally, this irritating and unsightly condition is addressed by the affected individuals, however only a few of them manage to apply herbal remedies for acne. Chronic forms of acne may occur over the shoulders, the back and chest as well as face and neck.

What Factors Are Responsible For The Development Of Acne

Some skin experts say the health of skin has something to do with the conditions of our internal organs and the health of our anatomy is based or dependent on the food or minerals we put in them. In this effect, acne is looked upon as a condition formed by the toxin and heat produced by internal organs, most specially our liver and lungs.

Thus, our systems should always be clean of all impurities, and this is where the herbal remedies for acne come in. Since some believe that acne is not some form of disease because acne can be avoided and treated, the treatment for this condition can be found in plants, or the foods that we eat. Diet is not solely responsible for acne, however certain foods may produce this condition, especially in some patients. Rich foods like chocolate, nuts, soft drinks, fatty meals and increased sugar, may produce this condition.

Certain drugs such as those containing bromides and iodides may also produce acne in some patients. Some girls also develop pimples before menstruation, and these usually remain for only one or two days. When acne remains for months or years, something drastic needs to be done to treat the condition. Stress due to family troubles and other factors may also play a major role in the development of this condition.

Herbal Treatments For Acne

Some natural remedies that help in the treatment of acne are fruits and vegetables, however above all these these plants, there are herbs that are found to be effective in curing acne such as lavender, calendula, goldenseal, tea tree oil, walnut leaf, rosewater, witch hazel and Echinacea. Herbs like aloe vera, tea tree oil, neem and lemon juice are a few of some of the herbs that have have been tested to be effective in the treatment of acne.

Honey and cinnamon applied on the affected area also has yielded positive results. However, these herbal treatments cannot function well if they are not supported by sufficient water intake since the herbal treatments are meant to flush out the toxins by allowing the harmful elements to exit the body through the the various secretion processes.

A simple way to prevent acne is to keep the skin clean by washing two or three times a day with fresh water. In addition, applying warm moist towels to the face for ten or fifteen minutes also helps. If pus has formed under the skin, do not open the pimple until it is ready to drain. Squeezing and pinching of the skin may exacerbate the inflammation and delay healing, and may also cause scarring of the face.
